Fundraising

Even traditional prom events can get a socially-conscious spin by donating part of the proceeds to a good cause, or hosting extra fundraising drives during the main event. Here’s how you can use prom to make a difference…

Pick a cause

There are thousands of good causes doing good with your funds, so picking just one (or a few) to raise money for can be a challenge. Why not link the cause to your prom theme, for example, using a nature theme to raise money for ecological causes? Another great tip is to find a local charity; you’ll be contributing to your community, and can follow up after the event, and find out just how they’ve put your donations to work.

Make it official

Suggest to your prom committee that you donate a cut of ticket sales to the cause, and have flyers and posters available with information about the charity. Connect with people from the organization – maybe they have tips and advice on how to make things run smoothly.

Give a reason to donate

The sad fact is, more people are likely to donate money when there’s a chance of getting something back, so make that work for you by running raffles, or fun auctions. Get local businesses to donate prizes, and offer skills and services like tutoring, car-washing, and makeovers. Get the prom organizers to allocate a certain part of the evening to your mini-event, but keep things quick – nobody wants to interrupt the party for long.

Stay organized

Being responsible for money can be a big challenge, so have a plan to keep things secure: a lock-box, security, constant supervision. Arrange to hand over funds to a staff member or parent at the end of the night, and keep records of how much gets donated, so none can go missing.
